Boston Fed President Eric Rosengren (voter) appeared to endorse further quantitative easing from the Federal Reserve in a speech on Wednesday. “We do have options, despite having pushed short-term rates to the zero lower bound,” he said, without adding specifics. The market reaction to the comments has been muted. Rosengren lamented the “anemic” recovery in the United States. He said the Fed must respond “vigorously, creatively, thoughtfully and persistently.”His comments are the most outright endorsement of a second round of quantitative easing yet. He noted that policy makers need to weigh the costs and benefits of additional asset purchases.
