Former Bank of England David Blanchflower (2006 to June 2009) has authored a scathing criticism of the Bank of England and the newly created Office for Budget Responsibility. He writes in Business Week that during his time on the MPC, BoE Governor Mervyn King “controlled the hiring and firing of the forecast team, who did his bidding. They had to produce a result that was consistent with Kings views, or else they would be history.” Blanchflower also says there is “growing evidence” that the Office for Budget Responsibility has “fiddled its own figures.” He also said employment forecasts and data have been manipulated. This sort of stuff has the potential to undermine the GBP for a long time.
