The mood among U.S. consumers improved in January to an eight-month high, according to the Conference Board’s index of consumer confidence. The measure increased to 60.6 from 53.3 in December; this was much better than the 54.0 consensus estimate. The improvement may translate into further consumer spending and new jobs. The sub-index that measures ‘jobs plentiful’ climbed to the highest since May 2009 while those expecting an increase in incomes climbed to an eight-month high.
